Traces
A woman sits next to the fireplace in her home near Marshall, Texas in 1939. When I see these photos of people in tough times, be they dust bowl refugees or four-year-old girls picking cotton or this woman in a home lined with newspapers for insulation, I marvel at how tough folks were back then and wonder if I could make it. Goodness. Taken by Russell Lee.
Traces
An auspicious historical moment: the arrival of natural gas to Marshall, Texas from the Caddo field in May,1909. It must have seemed rather a miracle. "You mean I can just turn this thing on and it will heat up the soup?"
Traces
Trade day around the Harrison County Courthouse in 1939. I want that first car on the right. Can you imagine tooling around Texas in that baby? Taken by the great Russell Lee.
