A woman sits next to the fireplace in her home near Marshall, Texas in 1939. When I see these photos of people in tough times, be they dust bowl refugees or four-year-old girls picking cotton or this woman in a home lined with newspapers for insulation, I marvel at how tough folks were back then and wonder if I could make it. Goodness.
