Traces
Traces of Texas reader Christine Ortiz kindly sent in this sort of heartbreaking photo and had this to say about it: "This picture was taken in 1935 in Robstown Texas. The woman in picture was my grandmother, Marina Solis. She was pregnant at the time with my mother. The rest are my uncles and aunts. They had just finished picking cotton from the field in which they are situated." Goodness what a photo. Marina looks plumb wore out. Picking cotton is miserable work. Picking cotton while pregnant? Unbelievably harsh. Thank you, Christine. I love it but dang it is sobering, too.
