dhsurles
John Bronaugh Hereford and Elizabeth Robertson were my great grandparents. They moved to Dallas in 1873 after the family fortune was lost in the Civil War. John and his brother James owned Hereford Bro's, which the Dallas Daily Herald described as having a "stock of clothing not surpassed in quality, style and variety north of Galveston." John was Dallas City Secretary for a while and then entered the insurance business with Dallas mayor John D. Kerfoot. John and Elizabeth owned four homes in "The Cedars" neighborhood just southwest of downtown Dallas. All the homes were razed when R.L. Thornton Freeway was built. This picture of one of the homes was taken around 1890. We believe that's John Hereford holding the reins of the horse, which was decorated for a parade, Elizabeth Hereford on the porch and their daughter Mary "Mamie" Hereford in the white dress with the umbrella. They died in 1898, 1904 and 1940 respectively and were buried in Greenwood Cemetery just north of downtown Dallas.
Sweetwater Sal
That horse is awesome and so is the parasol that she's holding. It's sad that the house is gone but I guess that's what constitutes progress, or so they say.
