Traces reader Joe Summers submitted this 1893 image of the newly-formed "Rusk Rifles," which was a company in the Texas Volunteer Guard. The Texas Volunteer Guard constituted the state militia in the period after the end of Reconstruction and before the creation of the Texas National Guard in 1903. Joe's grandfather is second from the left in the back row. The photo is fantastically clear.  Thank you, Joe, for sharing it.
