Slim's birthname was Thomas Austin Preston, Jr. He was born in Arkansas but when he was an infant he and his parents moved to Turkey, Texas. After they divorced, his mother returned to Johnson, Arkansas while his father moved to Amarillo. Slim later said "It's a good thing he did, because Amarillo Slim sounds a heck of a lot better than Turkey Tom or Arkansas Austin." He lived an up-and-down life that included playing poker with Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, being robbed at gunpoint in his home, and being indicted, though not convicted, on child molestation charges. Slim is show here in the 1974 film "California Split," in which a down-on-his-luck poker player, Elliot Gould, second left, tries to clear his debts.
