I’ve enjoyed your posts for a long time and didn’t know I could “join.” (!) I’m the curator of a small (tiny) museum in Salado  and we’re preparing the first properly organized Salado history exhibit in probably 30 years. We’re finding that the museum has a fairly good collection of old stuff, including a few surprising treasures. Most of the photos we are finding, however, are already familiar to most of the town. I realize that every image will be new to tourists, but I’m hoping to find something different. If I see a photo relating to Salado on Traces, am I allowed to use it in the exhibit? We do use credit line labels on all borrowed images, but I want to make sure and not make a FB boo-boo.

I'm back!

That's right, folks ... after staring down a couple of medical concerns I am back here in the front office. I tell y'all, for the last 14 months it was all I could do to try to keep my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Threads social media going ---- and even then I felt guilty when I had to take some time away.  But everything is fine now and I should be ready to come out guns a'blazin'. I'll be adding a ton of content over the next few months. Already added a slew of Texas quotes today and will post a bunch more tonight. Feels good, man.

Hi Deb L,

Regarding the use of photos posted here:

There are two kinds of photos that I post 1) photos in the public domain or that I believe to be in the public domain and 2) photos that readers send me.  In the case of photos that readers send me, I wouldn't feel right saying that you can use them, even though their intention when they send them to me is for me to post them on my social media. I think you'd need to ask the sender's permission.

The other kind of photo that can get posted here are photos posted by readers. In that case, again I think you'd need to ask the reader who posted it. I'm sure most won't have a problem with a museum using them. In fact, I'd be surprised if any of them have a problem with it but, again, I wouldn't feel right saying that you can use a photo that was posted by a reader.  It just seems like it's not my place to do so, being that it's their photo.
